Established in 2008
Headquartered in Tempe, Arizona, Base Commerce was founded in 2008 as Phoenix Payments by two veterans of the automated clearing house (ACH) industry, John Kirchhefer and Brian Bonfiglio. Their company Check Gateway was not actively pursuing credit card processing business and they wanted to have an entity focused on that area.
The company grew slowly for a number of years based on the efforts of a single salesperson. In 2012, Kirchhefer and Bonfiglio brought in two business development managers who were experienced in the credit card processing space, and also moved what was still called Phoenix Payments into its own facility. In the same year, the company had the opportunity to acquire a competitor called Teledraft. Staff, technology, and a portfolio of merchants (some for Check Gateway and others for Phoenix Payments) were part of the transaction and fueled rapid growth.
In 2013, Phoenix Payments changed its name to Base Commerce and hired its first CTO to drive the enhancement of its offerings. As the exponential increase in its client base continued, Base Commerce was named to the Inc. 500 list of Fastest-Growing Private Companies at number 23. It was on the list again in 2014 at number 60.
John Kirchhefer joins First American Payment Processing (ACH Processor).
Brian Bonfiglio joins First American Payment Processing.
John & Brian purchase First American Payment Processing.
First American Payment Processing changes the name to Check Gateway.
Phoenix Payments is formed to process credit cards.
Teledraft (competitor) is acquired. Portfolio now belongs to Check Gateway.
Changed the name from Phoenix Payments to Base Commerce.
Merger of Check Gateway and Base Commerce.
Expands to Jacksonville, FL with new office to support Sales.
